Official Information Act request 22.33 Professor Brady
I refer to the Official Information Act request dated 3 June 2022 for information relating to Professor Anne-
Marie Brady. You have requested the fol owing:
In 2018, Anne-Marie Brady asserted that several electronic devices that she said had been used in the course of
University funded research had been stolen. My understanding from Police officers involved in the case is that
they were unable to substantiate her speculation that Chinese-ethnic spies had stolen said devices.
In regards Mrs. Brady's academic work:
1 What, if any, internal investigations have been conducted by the University of Canterbury in regards Brady's
work?
2 What is the outcome of these investigations?
3 Have any of these investigations been affected by the disappearance of Brady's devices?
Please see below for the responses to your questions:
1. The University of Canterbury (UC) carried out a review into an article co-authored by Professor Brady
titled
Holding a Pen in One Hand, Gripping a Gun in the Other: China’s Exploitation of Civilian Channels
for Military Purposes in New Zealand as per the Education Act 1989 and UC’s Critic and Conscience of
Society and Academic Freedom Principle and Policy as detailed

here.)
2. There have been no internal investigations, therefore there is no outcome. This is refused under s
18(e) as the document alleged to contain the information does not exist.
3. As there have no internal investigations, the disappearance of Professor Brady’s devices has had no
effect. This is refused under s 18(e) as the document al eged to contain the information does not
exist.
