Response to your request for official information
Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) to the Ministry of
Health (the Ministry) on 28 May 2022. You asked:
“Please provide total number of myocarditis, pericarditis and myopericarditis (I think)
cases since 2000 - 2022
Please break this down into 10 year age brackets and provide in excel format for the three
different heart issue / categories as below
Myo etc - Year - Age 0-10, 10-20 etc - Total Cases
Also in the last couple of years can you separate as vaccinated or non-vaccinated”
The information requested is provided in the tables below. Please note the following when
considering this data:
• The counts are of discharges and not people. People with multiple hospitalisations are
counted each time they are discharged.
• Age is taken at the time of discharge.
• There is no specific ICD code for ‘myopericarditis’. Chronic rheumatic myopericarditis is
coded to I092
Chronic rheumatic pericarditis. The Ministry has included a breakdown of
this as a close match.
• For tables one and two, part of the increase observed between 2000/2001 and
2011/2012 can be at ributed to a change in the way that short stay events are reported
to the Ministry of Health by hospitals.
• This data is extracted from the National Minimum Dataset (NMDS) and is for financial
years (i.e., to 30 June).
For further information, please refer to:
www.health.govt.nz/publication/factsheet-short-stay-
emergency-department-events.
Note the Ministry does not receive reporting on medical conditions diagnosed in every
healthcare setting. It only holds data on acute myocarditis, acute pericarditis and chronic
rheumatic pericarditis diagnosed during publicly funded hospitalisations. Publicly-funded
hospitalisations data for 2021/2022 is not yet available.
Regarding the part of your request for the data to be broken down by COVID-19 vaccination
status, this is refused under 18(f) of the Act as the information requested cannot be made
available without substantial collation or research.
Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review any
decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be contacted by email at:
[email address] or by cal ing 0800 802 602.
Please note that this response, with your personal details removed, may be published on the
Ministry website at:
