Dear J Bruning
I refer to your request received on 23 May 2022 for the following information:
“Please can you provide a list of all applications (including reference numbers) that
the authority has rejected for approval under the HSNO Act sections 38-42 inclusive
from Jan 1 2017- May 1 2022.
Please can you advise the cost of each application paid by the applicants”
The information you have requested is below.
There have been no applications for Genetically Modified Organisms that have been
declined since 2017.For context, the EPA notes that the process of applying to have a new
organism approved for entry into New Zealand can be a complex and expensive process.
We work extensively with applicants to assist them in understanding the regulatory and
information requirements under the HSNO Act, to ensure that all necessary information is
provided by the applicant to the greatest extent possible. If it becomes apparent that the
regulatory/information requirements cannot be met, applicants may withdraw the application
before it comes to a decision-maker.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
You can contact the Ombudsman on 0800 802 602, or by email at
[email address]
If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us via
