Thank you for your request for information under the Official Information Act received by 
Lakes DHB on 15 March 2022. Your questions and our responses are noted below. 
 
With regards to general medicine and pediatrics departments. 
 
1) what is the list of senior medical officers designated to be clinical supervisors for medical 

students from the university if Auckland (i.e. who are the SMOs who can sign CSRs) 
 We have four Paediatrician SMOs and three Physician SMOs 
 
2) from above, what is the FTE of each SMO, and number of hours expected on site.

to prevent burn often doctors get rostered time off 

3a) how many days in a row can an SMO work as per contact 
Dependant on job size, this can be variable dependant on roster typically 5 days but 
when doing weekend shifts this can be up to 12 days.   
 
3b) what is the policy around SMO rostered days off 

Rostered as per MECA, recovery day if required after long shift, cal  back. 
 
 
 
 


3c) what compensation is given when SMO do work beyond their day off? e.g. come in on a 
RDO 
Additional duties is paid.

With regards to trainee interns 

5) how many hours per  week are trainee interns expected to be on placement in runs 
above? 
Trainee Interns are expected to be present during normal working hours on 
weekdays.  They are expected to do one long call day per week; however not required 
to attend after 10pm in the evenings but may do so if they wish.  They are also 
expected to work one weekend per attachment. (1:4). 
 
5a) as they are not paid, what protections are ensured trainee interns have proper rest and 

food breaks? 
The students al  manage to get scheduled breaks. 
 
5b) how many days in a row are trainee interns expected to be on placement 

Five days with the exception of when they work a weekend. This could be up to 12. 
 
5c) what is the dhb policy for rostered days off for trainee interns 

N/A as not DHB employees.  UoA depts eg paediatrics agree on the plan and Lakes 
DHB follow that plan. 
 
5d) how does dhb manage the expectations for trainee interns to be present with their health 

and wellbeing in a demanding field 
Lakes DHB do offer EAP to students if required.  Medical students who are unwel  
should not report for duty but notify the Medical Student Coordinator.  Consultants 
are always readily availabe to have disucssions with the trainee interns regarding wel  
being.
