Thank you for your request to Hon Kris Faafoi, Minister of Justice, on 13 February 2022. You
requested, under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act), information relating to claims against
Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) Waitangi Tribunal. Specifical y:

transferred to the Ministry of Justice as this information is more closely connected with our
functions.
We have consulted with our colleagues at the Waitangi Tribunal Unit and their response to your
Official Information Act request is below.
We have undertaken a search of our records and have found the following registered claims that

The claim concerns the closure of the Nelson District
Of ice of LINZ and the removal from Nelson and transfer
to Christchurch of all paper records. The claimants are
seeking to retain the records in the Nelson district. The
claimants sought an urgent hearing to prevent the
proposed removal from the Nelson district of the paper
records of LINZ.

The Gisborne
The claim is lodged by Wirangi Tarewa Pera on behalf of
District Office of
Te Aitanga a Mahaki.
Land Information
New Zealand
The claim concerns the closure of the Gisborne District
claim
Of ice of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and the
(received
relocation of that documentation out of the Turanga
November 2001) district. The claimant alleges that alternative
arrangements to house the records in the local Tairawhiti
Museum have been made ‘inordinately dif icult’ by senior
LINZ staff. The claimant alleges that the Crown's failure
"to provide and maintain adequate access [at] local
levels" has or is likely to prejudicial y affect the claimant
and is contrary to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

This claim is lodged by Wally Papa, Wal ie Clark, Ron
Owners
McGough, John Edmonds, Elthea Pakaru and others on

behalf of themselves, Raukawa Trust Board and
Forum and
Raukawa Iwi.
Focus Group
claim
The claim concerns the establishment of a Māori Land
(received
Owners Consultation Forum and Focus Group which wil
September 2003) essential y make recommendations on how Māori land
information should be used. It is alleged that this
prejudices Raukawa's right to determine how their taonga
should be managed and utilised.
The Tribunal has not received any claims regarding LINZ since 2016, nor are there any claims
pending registration.
