Thank you for your request dated 12 Kohitātea 2022 for information sent via the FYI.org.nz
website, where you sought the following information:
“I noted you have a nomination service
May I ask how is your process of nominating people and how many people registered
within your registry. Also, how many people you have successfully nominated to a
position from the past two year, may I have all the name of successful applicant and the
position they have been successful on.
If possible, may I also get the list of positions that you have nominated people to from
your registry in the past two year.”
Please  accept  my  apologies  for  the  delay  in  responding  to  your  request.  The  FYI.org.nz
website  automatically  forwards  requests  from  its  site  to  the  default  address  of
[email address].  Unfortunately,  automatic  forwarding  is  a  characteristic  of  many  email
SPAM delivery systems, and, in this case, your request went to a Te Puni Kōkiri SPAM mail
folder. I acknowledge that the reasons provided do not excuse the late response. An apology
for an oversight, however, is often more meaningful if it is accompanied by an explanation for
how the situation arose.
Similarly, I wish to assure you that Te Puni Kōkiri has taken steps to prevent a repetition of
this issue. Specifically, we have asked that FYI.org.nz update its system information to auto-
forward  future  information  requests  to  the  dedicated  OIA  email  address  at  Te  Puni  Kōkiri
[email address].

Response
Your  request  has  been  considered  under  the  Official  Information  Act  1982  (Act).  The
documents  and  my  decisions  regarding  the  release  of  the  information  are  set  out  in  the
Appendix. In addition, I have addressed each of the points you raised in your request below.

“How is your process of nominating people?”

Te Puni Kōkiri helps ensure that individuals with a commitment to Māori development are
considered for appointment to public bodies, in part by inviting people to register their
interest. Te Puni Kōkiri follows the following process:
1.  We receive a request for nominations from an agency managing the process of
appointments to a public sector entity.
2.  We review the requirements for the position.
3.  We search our database for individuals who match the requirements for the position.

4.  We send a list of matching individuals to the agency.
5.  The relevant person makes the appointment, for example a Minister or the
Governor-General (after the matter is put before Cabinet’s Appointments and
Honours Committee).
There  are  some  public  bodies  to  which  the  Minister  for  Māori  Development  makes
appointments  or recommends that the Governor-General  do  so.    Te  Puni  Kōkiri  manages
these  appointment  processes  on  the  Minister’s  behalf  and  in  these  instances  may  also
advertise the vacant position.
“How many people registered within your registry?”
Te Puni Kōkiri has a database of approximately 1,200 registered persons which we draw on
when nominations are requested.
“How many people you have successfully nominated to a position from the past two
year?”
Te Puni Kōkiri receives numerous requests for nominees from across the public sector. We
will  rarely  be  advised  of  successful  or  non-successful  appointments  for  those  nominees.
Accordingly, I refuse this part of your request under section 18(e) of the Act as the information
requested does not exist.
With respect to appointments with which the Minister for Māori Development is involved (as
above),  however,  I  can  provide  the  names  and  positions  of  those  appointed.  Please  see
Attachment 1 and 2.

“May I have all the name of successful applicant and the position they have been
successful on?”
We will rarely be advised of successful applicants and the positions they have been appointed
to.  Accordingly,  I  refuse  this  part  of  your  request  under  section  18(e)  of  the  Act  as  the
information requested does not exist.
With respect to appointments with which the Minister for Māori Development is involved (as
above),  however,  I  can  provide  the  names  and  positions  of  those  appointed.  Please  see
Attachment 1 and 2.

“May  I  also  get  a  list  of  positions  that  you  have  nominated  people  to  from  your
registry in the past two year?”
