Dear Judith
We refer to your information request dated 24 October 2021 made under the Official Information
Act 1982. You have requested confirmation whether Wainui Primary School was within the
University of Otago’s rural boundary for 2021, and therefore eligible for the Rural Origins sub-
category for entry to the 2022 Medicine (MB ChB) programme.
We note that we contacted you 1 November 2021 to confirm the years of attendance at Wainui
Primary School. Your response confirmed that the years of attendance were July 2008 – December
2010, and January 2012 – December 2014 (total of 5½ years).
Wainui School (492 Waitoki Road, Wainui) was classed as Rural with a High Urban influence during
the applicant’s years of attendance. Following the most recent Census, this classification has now
been changed to Urban.
Based on the years of attendance provided (which was while the School was classed as Rural), the
applicant would be considered under the Rural Origins sub-category for their application to the 2022
MB ChB programme as long as they provided the required information to support their application
(se
e https://www.otago.ac.nz/healthsciences/students/professional/medicine/#sub-categories).
Please note that the above information applies to applications received in 2021 for entry to the 2022
MB ChB programme, and may change for entry to the 2023 MB ChB programme.
We trust you will find this information helpful.
Yours sincerely
