You asked for the
following information:
“I request under the Official Information Act what efforts are being made to record,
preserve and promote Ngāi Tahu reo/dialect/language”
Your request has been considered in accordance with the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the
Act).
On 11 October 2021 you confirmed you are only enquiring about initiatives that are
specifically focussed on the Ngāi Tahu dialect, rather than Te Reo Māori in general.
Te Puni Kōkiri has not provided any funding to specifically record, preserve and promote Ngāi
Tahu regional language variations and or dialect. However, Te Puni Kōkiri has funded the
following projects, which support aspects of language and culture in the Ngai Tahu tribal
region and in turn may support Ngai Tahu reo variation/dialect/language:

You may also be interested in the work of Te Mātāwai
(www.tematawai.maori.nz), which is
an Independent Statutory Entity (not a government department). It was established under
section 17 of Te Ture mō te reo Māori 2016, and its primary purpose is to provide leadership
in promoting the health and wellbeing of the Māori language for iwi and Māori at the
community and home level. To fulfil its purpose, Te Mātāwai:
• provides advice to ensure that Māori language policies, systems, and initiatives
continue to support the revitalization of the Māori language, goals and aspirations in
homes, communities, and iwi
• invests in initiatives that support the revitsliation in homes, communities and iwi,and
• undertakes research and provides information on appropriate ways to revitalize the
Māori language in homes, communities and iwi.
