Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) to the Ministry of
Health (the Ministry) on 18 September 2021 for:
“Can you please provide the overall monthly figures from January 2020 til November
2020 (by month) on Intentional self-harm hospitalisations in New Zealand that were
reported but did not end in mortality, and a breakdown or graph of the ethnicity and age of
the above requests. In a numbers or excel document Can you also please add a column
to show the overall figures from January 2020 til November 2020 (By month) on
Intentional self-harm hospitalisations in New Zealand that were fatal, and a breakdown or
graph of the ethnicity and age of the above requests.
If any of these figures are unavailable for the dates specified please provide the most up-
to-date figures you have.”
Information about self-harm hospitalisations can be found in Appendix 1 and is released in full.
Data on suspected intentionally self-inflicted deaths, which is released by the Chief Coroner,
and Ministry data on confirmed suicides, is publicly available via an interactive web tool:
www.health.govt.nz/publication/suicide-web-tool. The suicide web tool includes statistics on
suspected intentionally self-inflicted deaths from 1 January 2009 to 30 June 2021, and
confirmed suicide deaths from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2018, presented by calendar
and financial year.
