Thank you for your Official Information Act request to the Department of Conservation,
received on 27 July 2021, in which you asked:
1. Are dogs prohibited in Carnival Park Scenic Reserve?
2. Alternatively, does the Department intend to prohibit dogs in Carnival Park Scenic
Reserve?
3. If the response to both questions is no, does the Department intend to consider the
need to prohibit dogs from Carnival Park Scenic Reserve?
4. If so, please provide details, including the process it will use and the time frame
involved. If not, please explain why.
Your questions and our responses are listed below:
1. Are dogs prohibited in Carnival Park Scenic Reserve?
No, dogs are not prohibited at the Carnival Park Scenic Reserve. We are not aware
that a ‘no dogs’ sign has ever been attached to the entrance sign at Carnival Park.
Management at the campground are also unaware of any signage prohibiting dogs.
2. Alternatively, does the Department intend to prohibit dogs in Carnival Park Scenic
Reserve?
There is no intention to prohibit dogs in the Carnival Park Scenic Reserve in the near
future.
3. If the response to both questions is no, does the Department intend to consider the
need to prohibit dogs from Carnival Park Scenic Reserve?
In the Wairarapa district the Department generally allows dogs on our public
reserves. The exception would be if dogs presented a danger to nesting wildlife or
protected birds such as kiwi, penguin or pāteke. These species are not present at
Carnival Park Scenic Reserve; the birds that are present are high nesters and as
such are not at risk to dogs.
4. If so, please provide details, including the process it will use and the time frame
involved. If not, please explain why.
As noted in point 2 above, the Department does not intend to prohibit dogs in the
Carnival Park Scenic Reserve in the near future.
Please note that this letter (with your personal details removed) may be published on the
Department’s website.
If you wish to discuss this with the Department, please contact Senior Community Ranger,
Ronnie Anderson on 027 559 5670 or by email at
[email address]. Nāku noa, nā
