[FYI request #16171 email] Dear Joseph
I refer to your request dated 2 September 2021, pursuant to the Official Information Act
1982, asking:
"are there any plans to increase Parking Fines this year? Inflation alone has
made the minimal $12 parking fine trivial and has removed the deterrent associated with
it".
Te Manatū Waka – Ministry of Transport (the Ministry) are aware of the concerns you raise
and are actively progressing work to address them.
As part of a wider review of the parking regulatory system, the Ministry is finalising a work
programme that will be progressed over the next 24 to 36 months. One of the workstreams
will consider whether amendments to penalty levels for parking offences are needed to
ensure they are proportionate to the harm caused and are an effective deterrent.
If regulatory changes are needed, they will require approval from the Minister of Transport
(and Cabinet). Any approved proposals will then be made available for public consultation
on the Ministry’s website before changes are made to legislation.
You have the right under section 28(3) of the Official Information Act to make a complaint
about the withholding of information to the Ombudsman, whose address for contact
purposes is:
The Ombudsman
Office of the Ombudsmen

The Ministry publishes our Official Information Act responses and the information contained
in our reply to you will be published on the Ministry website. Before publishing we will
remove any personal or identifiable information.
Yours sincerely
