Response to your request for official information
Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) to the Ministry of
Health (the Ministry) on 30 June 2021 for information relating to numerous vaccine-preventable
diseases.
Please find a response to each part of your request below:
1.
For each of these diseases, please provide the generally accepted global mortality rate,
from WHO or other data held by the Ministry.
This information is publicly available at
: www.who.int/data/gho/data/themes/mortality-and-
global-health-estimates.
“For each of these diseases, please also provide the following information held by the
Ministry for 2018 or the latest available pre-Covid calendar year
a. The number of cases in New Zealand
The Ministry does not have access to primary care data and cannot provide the number of
cases in New Zealand of all listed diseases. This information is held by Primary Health
Organisations. Therefore, the Ministry is refusing this part of your request under section 18(g)(i)
as the information requested is not held by the Ministry.
b. The number of hospitalisations in New Zealand
This information is publicly available at:
www.health.govt.nz/publication/privately-funded-
hospital-discharges-1-july-2017-30-june-2018.
c. The number of deaths in New Zealand
This information is publicly available at
: https://minhealthnz.shinyapps.io/mortality-web-tool/.
d. The percentage of people in New Zealand immunised
Responding to this part of your request would involve a substantial amount of work as each
vaccine has its own selection criteria and the Ministry does not have coverage reports for the
individual vaccines requested. I have considered whether charging or extending the time to
compile the information would enable us to respond. However, as each vaccine has its own
selection criteria, and the Ministry do not hold the coverage reports, I do not believe it is in the
public interest to do so. Therefore, I am refusing this part of your request under section 18(f) of
the Act, as the information requested cannot be made available without substantial collation or
research.
Under section 28(3) of the Act you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review any
decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be contacted by email at:
[email address] or by cal ing 0800 802 602.
Please note that this response, with your personal details removed, may be published on the
Ministry website at:
www.health.govt.nz/about-ministry/information-releases/responses-official-
information-act-requests.
