Thank you f or your email of 23 April 2021 asking whether a LED lighting upgrade is planned for the 
Christchurch Southern Motorway. 
 
The most recently completed section of the Christchurch Southern Motorway (Stage 2) utilises LED 
road lighting. Stage 2 is the section from Halswell Junction Road to Rolleston. 
 
Stage 1 of the Christchurch Southern Motorway, Barrington Street to Halswell Junction Road, which 
was completed in 2012 does not use LED lighting. That being said, the lighting on Stage 1 of the 
motorway does meet all requirements and is to a good standard. Theref ore, funding for retrofitting this 
section of the motorway is not likely in the foreseeable future, as there are higher priorities for LED 
conversion and other funding on the roading network.
