Thank you for your Official Information Act request to the Department of Conservation,
received on 30 March 2021.
Your questions and our responses are listed below:
1.
“Please advise the Department's most recent carbon footprint before the covid virus
"lockdown". Kindly include a full breakdown of the activities causing the emissions.”
For the period 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019 (pre-“lockdown”), the Department of
Conservation’s estimated carbon footprint is 11,000 tonnes CO2e. However, that number
has not been verified. Last year we joined the Toitū CarbonReduce programme, which
will provide an updated, audited estimate of our current carbon emissions by the end of
this financial year (2020/21).
Our most recent verified baseline for carbon emissions is from 2009/10. In 2009/10, the
last year of reporting on the Govt3 sustainability programme, our carbon emissions were
8,698 tonnes CO2e. The breakdown is as follows:
Source
CO2e (tonne)
Air Travel—Domestic
764
Air Travel—International

Diesel
4,108

“Please advise the cost, fuel, hours and carbon emissions from helicopter flights used by
DoC staff and its contractors on DoC business.” For the 2019/20 financial year, the breakdown is as follows:
Fuel type
Cost $
Hours
Tonnes of CO2e
Avgas
$283,135.37
244.93
30.52
Jet A1 Kerosene
$8,912,239.57
5,561.46
1,866.02
Totals: $9,195,374.94
5,806.39
1,896.54
Please note that these figures do not include Predator Free 2050 helicopter work sub-
contracted by the companies we contract to do the work.
3.
“Please advise the cost and carbon emissions from fixed wing flights used by DoC staff
and its contractors on DoC business.”
For the 2019/20 financial year, the cost of fixed wing flights by DOC staff and contractors
was $104,403.43. We do not currently have data on the carbon emissions for those
flights, though this will be resolved for our verified 20/21 emissions.
Please note that this letter (with your personal details removed) may be published on the
Department’s website.
