Request for information 2021-065
I refer to your request for information dated 26 March 2021, which was received by Greater
Wellington Regional Council (Greater Wellington) on 29 March 2021. You have requested the
following:
“Please provide information that will allow me to understand how and when the part of Belmont
Regional Park on the western side of the Transmission Gully Motorway is able to be accessed by the
public from the part of Belmont Regional Park on the eastern side of the Transmission Gully
Motorway, and vice versa.
Or in other words,
- how is the western part of the Park connected to the eastern part, if at all, and
- when will this access be provided?
GWRC's online maps are not clear about this.
I understand from previous information GWRC has provided that there is a requirement under the
RM Act (and agreements with GWRC) upon NZTA to provide linkages across, over or under the
Transmission Gully Motorway.”
Greater Wellington’s response follows:

The western to eastern and vice versa trails within Belmont Regional Park will be connected by way
of underpasses and bridges. These will be accessible for walking, cycling and equestrian groups who
use the park.
The above access will be available for use after the completion and opening of the Transmission Gully
motorway which is estimated as being by the end of September 2021. However, a specific date is
not yet available for when track connections will be reinstated. It is Greater Wellington’s
understanding that a period of time to complete out of designation work is allowed. It is envisaged
that this will be when the track connections have been completed. This information will be made
publicly available on Greater Wellington’s website, once it is known. Entry and wayfinding signage
in the park will be updated to reflect the reopening of these connections.

Waka Kotahi (New Zealand Transport Agency) will provide access as outlined above. A map,
Attachment 1 has been prepared to show the indicative reconnections within Belmont Regional
Park; the pink lines show where these connections will be constructed allowing cross park
connections. Once completed full access from Waihora Park, Cannons Creek lakes and Takapu Road
will be available across the Belmont Regional Park trail network.
If you have any concerns with the decision(s) referred to in this letter, you have the right to request
an investigation and review by the Ombudsman under section 27(3) of the Local Government Official
Information and Meetings Act 1987.
