Reporter Comments
This was a large fire in a two story office/warehouse. The last person left the
building at approximately 5.30pm, they locked up but didn’t turn the lights off or set
the alarm. The building was secure on Fire and Emergency arrival. The building
was constructed of steel and timber framing with a long run iron roof and glass
exterior in the upstairs office area.
Burn patterns to the warehouse and downstairs offices indicate fire and smoke
spread from the office area upstairs. The offices upstairs displayed minor to
severe fire damage. The offices were timber framing and glass. An open plan office
space for the engineers was located in the centre of the floor in front of the central
stairs
Burn patterns to the offices, cubicle’s, stairs and filing area indicate fire spread
from the engineer’s office space.
Act
The data room located in front of the engineer’s area was examined, burn patterns
in this area were consistent with fire spread at a high level and fuel loading.
The desks in the engineer’s area were examined. Burn patterns to the desks
against the walls indicate fire spread from the desk at the northern end of the
space.
This desk contained a laptop, two screens and a multi-board.
Parts of the metal bars of a multi-board were located in the debris in this area, I
was unable to locate the rest of the bars of the board amid the debris. This could

be an indication that the board had malfunctioned.
The lights in the upstairs offices were fluorescent tube lights and I was unable to
located the capacitors in the debris.
Due to the amount and severity of the fire damage I was unable to determine if the
fire had originated in the ceiling space and dropped down into the engineering

space of if it had originated on the desk top and spread upwards to the ceiling.
Therefore, based on the evidence available at the time of this investigation, the
