Official Information Act 1982 request 
 
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 4 March 2021 to the Ministry of 
Justice (the Ministry) regarding funding from the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) within the 
Justice system. 
 
Your request was for the following: 
 
1.  does the ACC fund any part of the Court/Justice system 
 
2.  what parts of the Courts/Justice system does the ACC fund 
 
3.  what process is used to ensure transparency and fair outcomes where the ACC financially 
involved  
 
In response to the first and second part of your request, I can advise that in accordance with Section 
164 of the Accident Compensation Act 2001, ACC funds the reasonable costs of hearing appeals to ACC 
decisions through the courts. These relate to Judicial salaries, fees, allowances and reasonable 
administrative costs. ACC also provides funeral grant funding and administers funeral grants for 
families of homicide victims. 
 
In response to the third part of your request, the Ministry does not hold this information. The 
information requested is judicial information which is not subject to the OIA under section 2(6)(b). 
Therefore, I am refusing your request under section 18(g)(i) of the OIA as there are no grounds for 
believing that the information is held by another department, Minister of the Crown, organisation or 
authority.
