Re Your Enquiry: Use of Blood Products 
Your request re use of blood products has been transferred to the New Zealand Blood 
Service (NZBS) by Auckland District Health Board. 
To the four questions you posed, NZBS would advise as follows: 
Question 1: point of donation and blood product categories relevant at the point of use.

All of the above components set out in this table are classified as fresh blood products.  
Question 2: Auckland region blood product usage between 1 January 2020 to 31 December 
2020. 
NZBS has interpreted this question as being usage of all fresh blood products within the 
Auckland region as covered by the Waitemata, Auckland and Counties Manukau District 
Health Boards for the nominated 12 month period. The information provided below is based 
on that understanding.

Question 3: as per question 2 but by each DHB and any use outside the public hospital 
system. 
For the 12 months to 31 December 2020 fresh blood product usage total 50,954 units with 
the Auckland region. The above table provides the usage by DHB as requested. As regards 
usage outside the public hospital system NZBS can confirm 638 units (7.35%) of the 
Auckland DHB total were issued to private hospitals. NZBS is able to confirm this figure as it 
manages the Auckland city hospital blood bank.

As NZBS does not manage either the Waitemata or Counties Manukau blood banks the 
level of private hospital usage cannot be provided by NZBS. NZBS can confirm the usage 
figures provided for those DHBs would include such usage. 
Question 4: How many units of Blood Product were used by each department of Middlemore 
hospital over the same 12 month period.  
The table below provides the level of detail requested.
