Hi everyone
I know almost all of you are caught up in the COVID-19 response, but these sessions are still going
ahead.  So I just want to remind you that if you haven't done so already, to please RSVP to
[email address] {preferably by tomorrow, but Wednesday will be ok).  T�ere have been a few
adjustments made to'the lists, so please make sure you double check which session your agency is meant
to be attending.  Also; I know that I'd said earlier that we need to limit to two per agency, but there can be
some flexibility on that if you participated in the NSS strategic response components {eg from different
areas of MFAT, DPMc; etc) so just let us know if you want more to come:

Subject: Whakaari/White Island National Security System updates and debrief sessions
(IN-CON Fl DENCE)
Good evening all
A few updates on where we are at with the debrief process.  As discussed at the Inter-Agency Working Group held
on 19 December 2019, the Chair of ODESC formally requested that agencies undertake debriefs of their operational
responses once their Whakaari/White Island response activities were complete, with an expectation that individual
agency debriefs would be completed by the week starting 20 January, in order to enable Ministers to be updated at
the first Cabinet of 2020.

Once the debriefs are completed, including the NEMA debrief and the NSS system debrief,  the LessonNZ
community of practice will collate and assess key overarching themes and lessons identified, and will produce a
consolidated summary report including recommendations.  Agencies will be given the opportunity to review the

conclusions and recommendations of the final report, with the report then to be presented to the Chair ODESC for
consideration and discussion by ODESC agencies as needed to determine next steps.
Given that the individual agency reports should be completed by know, we would be grateful if you could please
send your debrief reports/feedback to [email address] by Wednesday afternoon to feed into a
workshop discussion being held on Thursday 30 January.  This will enable to them to get through the some of the
evaluation process before factoring in the National Security System debrief.
And now - here are some details on that.  The National Security System debrief will be focused on the system

identified,  using the below table as a guide.  We can only accommodate up to two people from each agency, so we
would appreciate if you  could select two who were involved in some way with the Watch Group/ODESC/lnter
