Dear David

Official information request for information on length of trains
I refer to your official information request dated 28 January 2021, asking:
… I would like to know for the calendar year 2019:
* How many trains used the North Auckland Line
* The average length of the trains using the North Auckland Line.

For the calendar year 2019, KiwiRail ran 494 trains on the North Auckland Line (NAL).
409m was the average length, with a maximum length of 1070m achieved by train #126 on
15 April 2019.
In evaluating the data, we have also prepared a table showing the number and length of
these trains which I attach for your interest.
Please note this data only includes mainline trains, defined as work trains, unit trains and
Kiwirail operated passenger services (although there are none on the NAL). We have not
included Auckland Port services that sometimes run through the first 10km of the NAL as
they are not considered NAL services and do not appear on the train planning statistics.
We trust this answers your query, please get in touch if you have further questions. We
apologise for the delay in providing this response.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz
or by calling free-phone 0800 802 602.

Yours sincerely
