Thank you for your online submission dated 6 December 2020 requesting information
regarding operating systems in use by the New Zealand Police. You wil have noted
in our acknowledgement of 7 Dec 2020, that the response in accordance of Section 2
of the Act is due by 25 Jan 2021 due to the Christmas period.
You requested:
1. The number of devices in use running non-server Windows NT operating
systems, broken down by version name (e.g. XP, Vista, 7, 10).
2. The number of devices in use running Windows Server operating systems,
broken down by the version (e.g. 2003, 2003 R2, 2019).
3. The number of devices in use running macOS or Mac OS X, broken down either
by minor version (e.g. 10.0, 10.7, 11.0) or release name (e.g. Cheetah, Lion, Big
Sur).
4. The number of devices in use running iOS or iPadOS, broken down by major
version (e.g. iOS 10, iOS 12, iOS 14) and by device type (tablet or phone).
5. The number of devices in use running Android, broken down by both device type
(tablet or phone) and one of:
a. minor version for major versions prior to 5.0 and major version for versions 5
and up, or;
b. version name (e.g. Nougat, Oreo, Pie).
6. The number of devices in use running Linux, broken down by distribution and
version.
7. The number of devices in use running any other operating system (e.g. Windows
Embedded), with version information to an extent similar to that requested in (1)
through (6).
8. (1) through (7) should sum to the total number of computers, tablets, phones and
servers in use by the New Zealand Police. This request includes devices owned
and leased by the New Zealand Police, as well as any instances of operating
systems running in the cloud (for example, through Amazon Web Services EC2).

A single host with multiple virtual instances of an operating system(s) can
constitute multiple "devices" for the purpose of this request.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the Official Information Act 1982.
My response is as follows:
NZ Police does not operate devices running non-server Windows NT operating
systems (e.g. XP, Vista, 7, 10). All other responses to your questions from 2-8, are
tabulated below for ease of use.

Police has a small range of devices (including Android) in our wider environment that are not
managed centrally. As such, we are unable to confirm specific operating systems for those devices.
If you are not satisfied with my response to your request, you have the right to ask
the Office of the Ombudsman to seek an investigation and review of my decision.
