Thank you for your email of 14 October 2020, requesting information about trust 
bank account numbers for each prison. Your request has been considered under the 
Official Information Act 1982 (OIA). 
 
Corrections understands that being in prison can feel isolating, and positive support 
from friends and family is an important part of a person’s successful reintegration to 
the community when they are released. For this reason, we provide a range of ways 
for people in prisons to stay in touch with friends and family while they are in prison, 
including through phone calls, mail and visits. 
All people in prison have a trust account, which they can use to buy approved 
grocery items on a weekly basis. Trust accounts are limited to a maximum of $200 
and prisoners cannot spend more than $70 per week. 
Deposits into a person’s trust account can be made by friends or whānau members 
posting a cheque made out to the prisoner or the prison, or by depositing a cheque, 
cash or a money order while visiting. Money deposited via cheque cannot be spent 
until the cheque has cleared.  Electronic deposits can also be made if they are 
arranged in advance by calling the prison and talking to the prison trust clerk. When 
depositing money for pare, their prisoner record number (PRN) must be used as the 
reference number for the transaction. This will ensure that the deposited money will 
go directly into their account. People in prison can buy phone cards and other 
approved grocery items, such as toiletries and snack foods.
