Thank you for your email of 31 August to the Ministry of Education requesting the following
information:
1. The Ministry of Education has set up about 50 Subject Expert Groups – comprised of
about 400 practising teachers, academics and representatives from the tertiary and
industry sectors – to help develop these new achievement standards and supporting
teaching and assessment resources for each subject.
2. May I have the name of each members of the above "50 Subject Expert Groups", their
pay date, term of reference, term of appointment. How did you call for express of
interest from the public? Any recent meetings they had?
Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
Four Trial and Pilot Subjects were selected to test the Review of Achievement Standards
process and inform project planning. The four subject groups for English, Religious Studies,
Science and Visual Arts, have been engaging since mid-2019. Expressions of Interest to join
these Standards Expert Groups were called for in early 2019. These were published on the
Kōrero Mātauranga website, and linked to in the Education Gazette and Ministry bul etins, as
well as being sent to subject associations. Expressions of interest for the remaining 46
Subject Expert Groups were called for using the same distribution channels in October 2019,
and again in January 2020.

The remaining 46 SEG are preparing for engagement and some SEG members are still
undergoing probity checks. Once checks have been completed, all lists will be published on
the Education Conversations website at the link above. Therefore I am refusing this part of
the request under section 18(d) of the Act as the information requested is or will soon be
publically available.
Terms of Reference are the same for all Subject Expert Groups, with the exception of the
subject name. Attached with this response is a sample Terms of Reference document for the
SEG for Accounting.
Pay rates for SEG members have been set based on the Cabinet Fees Framework. This is
detailed in the Terms of Reference (attached with this response).
All SEG members are appointed until December 2020 with scope to be re-established each
year until the conclusion of the Review of Achievement Standards. This is also detailed in
the attached Terms of Reference.

Subject Expert Groups have not had any recent meetings. Trial and Pilot Subject Expert
Groups last met in March 2020, and meetings with further Subject Expert Groups are
expected to commence later in 2020.
