Tania Te Whenua
[FYI request #12679 email]
Dear Ms Te Whenua
Thank you for your email of 22 April 2020 requesting the following under the Official Information Act
1982 (the Act):
Over the past three years:
a) How many Maori women (and what percentage of the total number of applicants) applied
for Tier 2 roles or above?
b) How many Maori women (and what percentage of the total number of successful
applicants) were successfully appointed to the jobs which they applied for at Tier 2 or
above?
I understand that the State Services Commission will be responding in relation to Tier 1 roles, as the
State Services Commissioner is responsible for the appointment of public service Chief Executive
roles (Tier 1).
a)
To answer this question it is helpful to provide some context. Over the past three
years, the Ministry for the Environment has made 10 appointments at Tier 2. Of that
number, ethnicity data of applicants was collected for 6 appointments. Please note
that not all applicants declare their ethnicity on their applications.*
Fifteen per cent of the applicants for the 6 appointments, where ethnicity was
collected, were Māori women.
b)
Of the total 10 appointments, two of those appointed (20 per cent) were Māori
woman.
* In May 2018 a new recruitment platform was introduced, allowing for centralised collection of
recruitment records and data.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Office of the Ombudsman of my
decision to withhold information relating to this request, in accordance with section 28(3) of the Act.
The relevant details can be found on their website at:
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
Please note that due to the public interest in our work the Ministry for the Environment publishes
responses to requests for official information on our website on our
OIA responses page shortly after
the response has been sent.
If you have any queries about this, please feel free to contact our Executive Relations team.
Yours sincerely
