HUI FOR TE WHARE KAKANO 13th APRIL 2011. 
 
Present: Hana, Sue, Sarah and Marcus , Charlene, Vivianne, Rachael, Tania, Trish, 
Cherie Sean, Cara, Geraldine, Sue Heta and Ari. 
 
Apologies: All Present. 
 
1.  Karakia. Hana thanks everyone for coming tonight.  
 
2.  Learning and Teaching:  
 
  Hana shares that she has come to Parakai School to help teach local children 
their Reo and Tikanga. Hana shares that she has now come out of her 
beginning teacher time and is now fully registered.  
 
  Hana feels she has delivered the teaching well and acknowledges there have 
been a few problems along the way. She talks of provide the tamariki with good 
spoken Te Reo.  
 
 
  Hana says she started with years 1 – 2 and this has now grown up to year 5.  
 
  Hana talks about running records in Te Reo and Gloss testing and the stages 
children are at. Two children are currently working at stages 5 – 6, the rest of 
the children are working at stage four in both Te Reo and English.  
 
 
  If parents are concerned about where they children are at then please come 
and talk to her and she will help provide you with information to help support 
their continually learning. 
 
  Rachael reminded that National Standards will be used within the unit this year 
and that should also provide further assessment data to help create a clearer 
picture for parents.  
 
  Hana comments were that she delivers to the best of her ability. She talked 
about the gathering of resources that took place at Highams Beach. Children 
will be doing something with these resources tomorrow. 
 
 
3.  Contract:  
  Hana has handed out the Whanau agreement and discussed this with parents. 
  Hana invites question time shortly. 
 
4.  Mahi Kainga:  
 
  Tamariki need to finish work at home that has not been completed during the 
day and signed by an adult.  
 
  Children will be bringing home a book that has been read during guided 
reading session. Guided Reading will be twice a week. 
 
  Children need to read and explain the book to parents.

  Hana asks parents to come to her if they have any concerns about homework 
not coming to school. Hana also asks that should parents have issues with 
each other – please sort it out outside of school and the unit. 
 
  Hana expressed her challenge to encourage tamariki to use the Reo all the 
time in class.  
 
  Sean talked about Maori achievement in schools being different to the rest of 
the school. It takes time for it to click; when it does they will soar.  
 
Parent response – question time: 
  Rachael talked about her understanding about Gloss stages and suggested 
that parent information to help children  
  Hana will provide a copy of each child’s stage of number development and 
she can also provide a copy of National Standards. Children will bring 
this home in Term Two, Week 1.  
  Sean reminds about those teachable moments when driving in the car. 
 
 
5.  Fundraising:   
  There is an opportunity to fundraise at the Kaipara Triathlon that will be held 
here at Parakai. There should be drinks (non fizzy), juices and sausage sizzle. 
Hana will the overseer of the fundraising committee and she will purchase the 
products. Helpers on the day will be: Cherie, Geraldine, Vivanne, Marcus. 
 
  Helensville Memorial Hall: World Cup Café will be run from 2 – 6pm on 
October 8. Parents need to make slices, cakes, etc and the money will go to 
the unit. They are expecting up to 1000 people. Marcus has suggested a small 
hangi might be ideal.  
 
  Hana will co-ordinate this. The Committee: Marcus, Trish (tentative), Cherie. 
                   
 
6.  Raffle: 
  Charlene thanks everyone for the goods. Sjaan Mekkleholt’s 20 tickets were 
not sold and it is now too late, so unfortunately we will be down by $40.00.  
  180 tickets have been sold @ $2.00.  
  Sean drew the raffle and the winning number 51 orange is for TeOrangi. The 
second drawn number is number 3 orange is for Aimee.  
 
7.  Other Business: 
 
  Working Bee: Held on Friday 29 April @ 10am. Hana will provide a list of things 
that need to be done.  
 
  Tania hands out a copy of the financial report from March to May.   
 
  Sean will check some details about this financial report and come back with 
further information. 
 
  If parents have any questions about this report they will be collated and asked 
at the next meeting. 
 
  Next Hui: Week One - 4th May @ 5:30pm.
