I refer to your request of 14 March 2020 to the Ministry of Social Development, requesting, under 
the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), the following information: 
 
What is the total number of staff employed by The Ministry of Housing and Urban 
Development (HUD) and what is the annual wage and salary outgoings for the calendar year 
of 2019 for HUD ? 

 
On  17  March  2020  your  request  was  transferred  in  full  to  the  Ministry  of  Housing  and  Urban 
Development (the Ministry). I have addressed the parts of your question separately below. 
 
What is the total number of staff employed by The Ministry of Housing and Urban 
Development 

 
The total number of Ministry employees as at 31 December 2019 was 261.  
 
The total number of people employed by the Ministry throughout the 2019 calendar year (1 January 
2019 to 31 December 2019) was 362, which includes new starters and leavers during the period. 
The number of leavers includes those employees transferred from the Ministry’s KiwiBuild unit to 
Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities, which was established on 1 October 2019. 
 
[W]hat is the annual wage and salary outgoings for the calendar year of 2019 for HUD 
 
The Ministry’s salary and wage outgoings for the 2019 calendar year was $32.9 million. This figure 
includes superannuation, higher duties/special duties allowances, and ACC levies. 
 
You  have  the right  to  seek  an  investigation  and  review  of  my  response  by  the  Ombudsman,  in 
accordance with section 28(3) of the Act. The relevant details can be found on the Ombudsman’s
