Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
The number of ECE teachers who are men is slowly increasing over time, although it remains low
relative to the overall number of ECE teachers.
We want to ensure that teaching is a career of choice. In late 2019, we launched a marketing
campaign to attract more New Zealanders into the teaching profession with TV advertisements
featuring male and female teachers.
We are also developing a comprehensive Education Workforce Strategy that is future focused, and
wil consider workforce demographics including gender. This includes working in partnership with
the profession to achieve our vision of a high quality, high trust and respected teaching profession.
Your request
The total number of qualified male ECE teachers is noted in the table overleaf. Further breakdown
by the type of qualification you have requested is not available as no data was collected at that level.
For this reason, I am refusing your request under section 18(e) of the Act, as the information does
not exist.
