Dear Rebecca Ong

EXTENSION OF TIME TO ANSWER OFFICIAL INFORMATION REQUEST

Thank you for your email of 24 February 2020 requesting information relating to fast-
growing broiler breeds. You specifically requested the following:
I would like to make a request regarding the research you've done regarding the
detrimental effects of using fast-growing broiler breeds on meat chicken health and
welfare, including what scientific literature you've reviewed in relation to this topic. I would
also like to know what actions MPI plan to take on the issue of fast-growing broiler breeds
and if MPI plans to take no action, then why they are taking no action?

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) will not be able to respond within the
timeframe set out in the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) because consultation
necessary to make a decision on your request is such that a proper response cannot
reasonably be made within the normal 20 working day time limit.

MPI will reply to your request by no later than 17 April 2020, earlier if possible.

You have the right under section 28(3) of the OIA to seek an investigation and review
by the Ombudsman of our decision to extend the time limit for responding to your
request.

Yours sincerely
