Bill and I are in the process of getting some feedback from our team at LINZ on the process we went through with
special disclaimers in hydrographic datasets, we should have some information for you by our next meeting.

In the meantime, were you still able to comms/a summary relating to the risks that FENZ outlined regarding the
dataset as discussed? This may help give us a bit more context.

Let us know if you have a date in mind for that follow up meeting.

Attached, for your information, is a copy of the terms on which FENZ currently licences the use of NZ Localities Dataset. As
you’ll see, these terms are reasonably permissive – though do attempt to maintain the currency of datasets through particular
legal obligations.

Bill – thanks again for the offer to discuss particular CC restrictions that LINZ has used successfully in the past, and to
potentially loop in with LINZ’s legal team. FENZ is certainly interested in exploring those. Do let me know when might be a

good time to further those conversations, and we’ll make the necessary arrangements. Might you also be able to forward us
Rob Deacon’s contact details?  It’d be good to be able to loop in with him regarding the fundamental dataset / custodianship
queries FENZ has recently fielded.

Thanks again for coming in this morning.

It was certainly helpful for us to be able to bounce our ideas off your, and glean your insights as to the most effective means of
THE
FENZ being able to publish NZ Localities under a Creative Commons licence(s).

Following our meeting, we’ve certainly got a few action items to cover off internally. In particular, we’ll be turning our minds in
more detail to:
a. Establishing the nature and extent of the Public Risk / Operational Risk associated with the Dataset.
b. Considering the appropriate CC licences and terms on which the Dataset could be shared.
c. Considering the technological infrastructure for the sharing of the Dataset in real-time via API.
d. Developing appropriate wrap-around comms to mitigate the Public / Operational risk, the ‘moral hazard’ and ensure
that licensees (viewers) understand the provenance, purpose, nature, and extent of the data.
