Thank you for your request of 4 December 2019 requesting the following information under the Official 
Information Act 1982 (the Act): 
 
Please provide the number of electric motorbikes and electric mopeds registered by year from 
2015 to date.  
 
As the term “registered” can have different interpretations, we are providing two tables of electric 
motorbike and electric moped data for you below. One is based on an active licence and the other one 
is based on an active registration. 
 
Table 1 below details the number of vehicles with an active vehicle licence. These are vehicles that 
have paid their current annual licensing fee to be allowed to travel on New Zealand roads. This is 
commonly referred to as 'Rego'.

•  been registered under the Transport (Vehicle and Driver Registration and Licensing) Act 1998 
•  have not been deregistered, and 
•  the registration has not lapsed due to not having a valid vehicle licence for 12 months or more.

It is important to note the following in relation to the data provided:  
 
•  Data is reported from the Motor Vehicle Register (MVR) and is current at 10 December 2019. 
•  Data is limited to vehicles of type ‘Motorcycle’ or ‘Moped’, and motive power category ‘Full 
Battery Electric’ or ‘Hybrid Electric’. 
•  Data is a snapshot taken each 1st of January between 2015 and 2019. 
•  Active licence - is where the current annual licensing fee has been paid for the vehicle 
allowing it to travel on New Zealand roads. Commonly referred to as 'Rego'.  
•  Active registration – is where the vehicle has not been deregistered and the registration has 
not lapsed. 
•  Registered - in relation to a vehicle, means registered under the Transport (Vehicle and Driver 
Registration and Licensing) Act 1998. A vehicle must be registered and have plates issued to 
it before it can be licensed to be used on the road.
