I write in response to your Official Information Act request, dated 16 October 2019. You requested
the following information:

Could you please provide the total number of hospital beds from 2016 to 2019 at Manukau
District Health Board?

Note: these bed numbers include the maximum physical bed capacity across al CM Health facilities
(Middlemore Hospital, Manukau Health Park and community sites – Otara, Botany, Papakura, Pukekohe,
and Franklin). These include all services – Emergency, Medical, Surgical, Women’s Health/ Maternity,
Mental Health and community Rehabilitation.

Note: these numbers do not reflect resourced capacity (which can vary for seasonality and demand), or the
actual occupancy of beds.
Counties Manukau Health (CM Health) provides health and support services to people living in the
Counties Manukau region (approx. 569,400 people), as wel as regional and supra regional specialist
services (Burns, Plastics and Orthopaedics). Our services are delivered via hospital, outpatient/
ambulatory and community-based models of care.
Variations in bed count data provided over time may be due to different counting methods, the
timing of a bed census, and definitions of what constitutes a bed (e.g. include/exclude Day stay and
Clinic Treatment chairs, Emergency Department trol ey).
We note that our Emergency Department has 146 beds included in the totals. Additional y, there are
“chairs and other non-beds” provided, which support delivery of acute assessment and short stay

care, as wel as in procedure units, outpatient clinics and diagnostic rooms, day-stay surgery, delivery
suites, and emergency trol eys.
