Dear Kelly
Re:
Official information request – Graduate Research Scholarships
I refer to your official information request dated 8 September 2019 asking for the fol owing information.
“Please can you inform me how many students newly enroled in Graduate Research Degrees with the
University of Waikato in 2018 without being offered a scholarship?
Please can you provide me with a list of the qualifying GPAs for any such student so New Zealanders can
understand the cut-off for scholarships?”
The information you have requested is below.
•
Please can you inform me how many students newly enroled in Graduate Research Degrees with the
University of Waikato in 2018 without being offered a scholarship?
A total of 101 new graduate research students were offered scholarships in 2018 and a total of 171 new
graduate research students were not offered scholarships in 2018.
•
Please can you provide me with a list of the qualifying GPAs for any such student so New Zealanders can
understand the cut-off for scholarships?
The regulations of both graduate research scholarship funded centrally by the University of Waikato state
that a minimum grade average of A- is expected for eligibility. This includes the University of Waikato
Doctoral Scholarship and University of Waikato Research Masters Scholarship.
Note that having a minimum GPA does not automatical y entitle a student to the award of a scholarship. The
GPAs we use (as do al New Zealand Universities) are published by Universities New Zealand. A minimum A-
equates to at least a GPA of 6.501.
If you wish to discuss this decision with us, please feel free to contact me directly.
Yours sincerely
