Official information request for cannabis offences 
 
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 10 May 2019 for “the  total cost of 
enforcing, prosecution and incarceration of cannabis offenses”. 
 
The information you have requested is not held by the Ministry of Justice. In regard to the parts of your 
request for the total cost of enforcing and prosecution of cannabis offenses, I have consulted with the New 
Zealand Police and they have advised they hold this information. I have therefore transferred this part of 
your request to the New Zealand Police under section 14 of the OIA. 
 
In regard to  the parts of your request for the total cost of incarceration of cannabis offenses,  I have 
consulted with the Department of Corrections and they have advised they hold this information. I have 
therefore transferred this part of your request to the Department of Corrections under section 14 of the 
OIA.  
 
You will hear from both, the New Zealand Police and Department of Corrections in due course.  You have 
the right under section 28(3) of the OIA to complain to the Ombudsman about the decision to transfer your 
request. The Ombudsman may be contacted by writing to PO Box 10-152, Wellington.
