Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 20 February 2024. You
requested:
We see on Facebook your car was painted with different colours at krishna holi
festival. What was the cost of cleaning the paint off the police car and the uniform
Police were delighted to be present at the Krishna Holi Festival of Colours in Kumeū, an
event which attracted an estimated 15,000 people. In Police’s role to ensure the public are
safe and feel safe, we engage with the communities we are part of and serve. Police
anticipated that our uniforms and vehicles would be part of the fun.
Police has been attending such enjoyable cultural events for some years and staff are
always briefed to use old or disused Police clothing to negate unnecessary cost. The
paints used were made from food-grade corn starch and therefore could be washed away
with water.
Police is unable to provide a specific cost for cleaning the paint as there is no unique cost
associated with the cleaning of Police garments and vehicles from the festival. Cleaning
is a routine task to keep our assets in optimum condition, a cost of which is
accommodated by the overall Police operating budget.
Therefore, your request is refused under section 18(g) of the OIA, as the information
requested is not held by the Police and I have no grounds for believing that the
information is either held by or connected more closely with the functions of another
Department or Minister of the Crown or organisation or a local authority.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this
decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
