Dear Shanna
Thank you for your email of 27 September 2022 requesting, under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act), information about the Labour Inspectorate and Regional Seasonal Employees (RSE).
Responses to your questions are set out below.
How many visits did Labour Inspectors make to RSE workers at their workplaces, and separately,
to their view their accommodations since 1 January 2022?
Labour Inspectors have visited with RSE workers on approximately 37 occasions since 1 January 2022.
This number is approximate, as this information is not captured on the Labour Inspectorate’s system.
How many of these visits were pre‐arranged, and how many were surprise visits with no prior
notification to the Employer(s)?
Labour Inspectors have completed 140 accommodation visits since 1 January 2022. Nine of those visits
were not prearranged. Please note that Labour Inspectors do not have powers to enter and inspect
residential properties. Therefore, where the inspector has not arranged in advance with the
Employer/landlord to view the property, they will need to contact them on arrival to gain entry.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this response. The
relevant details can be found at: www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
Yours sincerely
