As part of the review of the OIA response, Wendy Shaw, NZ Geographic Board, has asked
that I share her original advice with you, in addition to the summary I previously provided.
Wendy’s full advice, provided on 4 November 2019, was
‘I confirm that the NZGB has no objection to any ‘official documents’ including
FENZ’s ‘Localities Dataset’ becoming openly available.
Under Section 32 of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o
Aotearoa) Act 2008, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) must clearly state for
a particular locality name, which is not official and has a different official name, that

the FENZ locality name is not the official name. See the New Zealand Gazetteer
https://gazetteer.linz.govt.nz/ for official place names. The FENZ statement should
be easily discoverable by users when identifying individual locality names that fall
within this situation. A general statement should also be included in the dataset

description.
I think to just have a general statement in the dataset description is not adequately
informing users. I would add that the intent of government in having naming
legislation with a compliance provision is to encourage the use of official place
names.’
