Capital gains tax (Bright Line test) revenue and proportion of total sales

H Hutchinson made this Official Information request to Inland Revenue Department

The request was partially successful.

From: H Hutchinson

Dear Inland Revenue Department,

I would like to know:

- What has been the total revenue from capital gains tax following the ‘bright line’ test coming into effect on October 1 2015?

- What is the number of houses sold since October 1 2015?

- What proportion of houses sold since October 1 2015 have been taxed under the ‘bright line’ test?

- Can these figures be broken down into regions of New Zealand?

Yours faithfully,

H Hutchinson

Dear H Hutchinson,

Thank you for your official information request, which was transferred to
us by Land Information New Zealand on 11 July 2016, for information on
“the number of houses sold since 1 October 2015”.

Please see below the numbers we currently have on the number of houses
sold since 1 October 2015.  This is for only confirmed sales we have
received from councils. There could be some house sales not included in
the numbers below as we may have not yet received these yet e.g. there can
be a time lag before the information is available.  We are also not a
valuation service provider for all councils, which means we may not have
received the sales for those territorial authorities.

Sales Received 1.10.15 - 01.7.16 - confirmed
Category only
Lifestyle properties 10,409
Residential houses 109,569

Regards,

Justin Snarski
