Police Communications
Kieran Geraghyt made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police
Response to this request is long overdue. By law New Zealand Police should have responded by now (details and exceptions). You can complain to the Ombudsman.
From: Kieran Geraghyt
Dear New Zealand Police,
As per the FYI requirements, I am a New Zealand born citizen residing in New Zealand.
In Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch the police radios are encrypted, To prevent unauthorized monitoring.
I am a scanner enthusiast.
The implementation of the P25 Encryption means I can no longer scan the police.
As silly as this will sound.
How can one become Authorized to listen,
Can I apply as media?
Is there any other way please.
I find it very interesting to hear the eagle chopper directing ground units and hearing the victory when a K9 has been made after a long pursuit.
I am a very honest person and would never share any information that is transmitted over the radio.
My purposes are fully legal and I am only wanting to listen as a curious person and I have great interest in what goes on in my community.
I am also considering police as a future career.
Yours faithfully,
Kieran Geraghyt

Good afternoon, Kieran
Your request to apply to listen to the Police scanner is not one we can
process under the Official Information Act.
I can tell you that than the encryption was brought in to prevent people
from listening in to Police communications and it would be unlikely in the
extreme for non-Police, or partner agencies, to be authorised to bypass
it.
Kind regards
Renée
