assets and our ability to exert our rights and responsibilities. These

Act
New Zealand’s maritime security interests extend well beyond our
immediate borders. We have constitutional responsibilities to the Realm
1982
states (Niue, Cook Islands and Tokelau) and have deep and sustained
national interests in the Pacific and Southern Ocean. We need to be
active participants in our region, and cooperate closely with our ally
Australia, and other key security partners in the region. We rely on good
governance around critical physical and electronic sea lines of
communication and have deep economic, political, and cultural
connections across the Asia-Pacific.
