Question 7 and 8– Unit types and definitions, Policies.
CALL SIGN ALLOCATION PRACTICE
Police have two broad systems for allocation of call-signs to units. Both systems are
generally intended to identify the following either separately or together:
Geographic area of responsibility/coverage or home station
Role or type of work predominantly undertaken eg traffic enforcement or CIB
Rank or supervisory level
The systems do differ slightly between the three Comms Centres situated in Auckland,
Wellington and Christchurch.
The first system based on these broad categories for each of the three Comms Centres is
detailed below. These lists have been in place for some time and due to the changing role
and focus of Police have been adapted as needs required so are not perfectly reflective of
call-signs that have been allocated.

Due to these changing roles, focus areas and ways of doing things a trial of a new call-sign
allocation model is underway in the Police Districts of Counties-Manukau and Bay of Plenty
along with some minor differences in places such as Police College.
This new call-sign allocation model is detailed on the following page. It is five characters in
length and consists of the following elements:
Command Code
2 letters that identifies the geographical area of responsibility
Unit Type
1 letter + 1 digit that identifies the type of unit
Unique Identifier
1 letter or 1 digit that provides for uniqueness as well as differentiates between
supervisory units from others
