INTERNAL MEMORANDUM

To:
Deans

From:
Professor Raewyn Dalziel

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic)

Date:
6 June 2006

Subject:

Postgraduate Qualifications: Honours, Merit and Distinction

In 2005 a Working Party on Grading recommended through Education Committee to Senate
that classes of honours should be ‘aligned consistently with particular grades across the
University’.  Senate agreed that an expanded working party should develop a policy on the
assignment of classes of Honours, Distinction and Merit.

A working party has subsequently met with representatives of all Faculties and has reported
to Education Committee.  This working party has proposed that classes of Honours,
Distinction and Merit be awarded consistently across the University on the basis of the GPA
gained by the student.  It has proposed the GPAs required to attain each class of Honours,
Distinction and Merit.

Education Committee has asked that this paper be referred to Faculties for their views.  These
views should be sent to the University Secretariat: [email address] by 30 June
2006.
