Subject: Postgraduate Qualifications: Honours, Merit and Distinction
The Faculty of Law view on the recommendations for classes of Honours is that we
would much rather retain our present system in which First Class Honours are
attained at GPA 7.0 (same as recommendation), Second Class (1st Div) at 6.0 (as
opposed to the recommended 5.5), and Second Class (2nd div) at 5.0 (as opposed
to the recommended 4.0). In other words, that no level of Honours if awarded for
GPA less than B.
Obviously we would comply with any University-wide requirement for consistency
but the above is our strong preference.
We don’t have a view on recommendation (ii); support (iii) and (iv).
