We refer to your email dated 22 October 2016 and subsequently transferred to us from the Ministry of 
Health on 2 November 2016 requesting the following information under the Official Information Act. 
 
Could you please provide the exact figure of the last five years for the following: 
 
1.  Total number of PGY1 House Officer Positions filled in across DHB in New Zealand outside of ACE 
matching system by UK/Canada/Ireland graduates? 
2.  Total number of PGY1 House Officer Positions filled in across DHB in New Zealand outside of ACE 
matching system by NZREX graduates? 
 
West Coast DHB: 
 
The West Coast DHB does not employ PGY1 House Officers. 
 
Canterbury DHB: 
 
It is difficult to accurately report the numbers prior to November 2013 at this level of detail as the RMO 
Unit at the time did not have the systems to allow this. As a result, we have included the number of all 
House Officers who came from UK, Canada and Ireland. These House Officers were not PGY1. They were 
PGY2 or above who occupied positions that are usually occupied by PGY1s. As a result, we might be 
over-reporting the numbers. 
 
We have also added a column for the graduate Talent Pool. New graduates who are not matched via 
ACE are placed in the Talent Pool. DHBs are encouraged to recruit from this to cover PGY1 vacancies.
