Request for information 2016-001
I refer to your request for information received by Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC)
on 1 January 2016. You have requested the following information:
“
What reports and surveys have been carried out to determine if any of the ex- Auckland DMU
(ADK/ADL units) or Push/Pull carriages (SA/SD carriages) are suitable for the Wairarapa
Connection rail service in order to increase capacity and/or frequency of service[?]”
GWRC’s response is as follows:
No reports or surveys have been undertaken by GWRC to determine if any of the surplus Auckland
rolling stock could be suitable for the Wairarapa services.
GWRC did make some enquiries when the Auckland units first went on the market. We were
informed that offers would only be considered for entire fleet types.
Please note that the rolling stock in Auckland is set up for urban metro use, and not for outer-
suburban use, which means they are fitted with compact metro style seating, do not include facilities
such as toilets and tables, and have been configured with large central doors. Re-configuring this
type of rolling stock would involve extensive costs to provide the level of comfort and facilities that
Wairarapa passengers have come to expect.
An investigation has recently commenced to determine what will be required to enable the SE and
SW carriages to operate together as part of the same train. The key benefits for this are increased
operational flexibility, and the potential for increased capacity to be provided if it is required.
If you have any concerns with the decision(s) referred to in this letter, you have the right to request
an investigation and review by the Ombudsman under section 27(3) of the Act.
