To: Auckland Council, Official Information Team
I am writing to request information under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act (LGOIMA) regarding the management of dogs within the Auckland Council animal shelters.
Specifically, I request the following data for the 48-month period ending May 2026
Euthanasia Statistics: The total number of dogs euthanized by Auckland Council, broken down by month.
Reasons for Euthanasia: A breakdown of the primary reasons for euthanasia (e.g., aggression, behavioral issues, medical necessity, or shelter capacity constraints).
Assessment Methodology: Documentation of the current behavioral assessment framework or matrix used by the Council to determine if a dog is "rehomeable" versus "non-rehomeable."
Independent Review Policy: Any existing policies, guidelines, or procedures that allow for independent behavioral assessments (by non-Council staff, such as qualified third-party behaviorists) to be conducted on animals prior to a decision to euthanize.
Rehoming Protocols: Any internal policy documents regarding the criteria and decision-making process for designating a dog as suitable for rehoming.
I am requesting this information to better understand the current landscape of animal welfare in Auckland and to identify opportunities for collaborative, community-led solutions that could reduce unnecessary euthanasia.
Please provide this information in a digital format (PDF or spreadsheet). If any part of this request requires clarification or is considered too broad, please contact me as soon as possible so we can refine the scope to ensure I receive the data needed for my advocacy work.
Yours faithfully,
LeVonne Scott
