Dear Samuel
Official information request: Homophobia in sports
Please find attached our response to your official information request dated 9 December
2015 for information relating to homophobia in sports. As per the letter sent to you on 26
January 2016, the timeframe for responding to your request was extended to allow for
consultation to occur.
The name, phone number and job title of some individuals in the attached correspondence
has been withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) to
protect the privacy of natural persons. All other redactions within the documents have been
noted and the relevant withholding ground under the Act provided.
As you will see from the attached material we are in the process of finalising a Sport Integrity
Framework which will then be published on our website. Information relating to the
Framework has therefore been withheld as it will soon be made publicly available on Sport
NZ’s website.
The Framework will be a summary of the work that is occurring at Sport NZ and elsewhere
across the sport sector in the area of integrity. It will also include details of international best
practice. The Framework includes a series of specific focus areas and related position
statements. One of these focus areas is addressing diversity, which covers the issue of
homophobia in sport.
You will also see from the attached material that we are supporting NZ Rugby in the work
they are leading with some other major sporting codes on diversity and inclusion.
Should you have any questions about the Framework or the work Sport NZ is doing to
support NZ Rugby then you are welcome to contact Michael Woodside, Policy Manager, on
021 242 02021 or
[email address]
Please note that if you are not satisfied with this response you have the right to make a
complaint to the Ombudsman under section 28(3) of the Act.
Yours sincerely
Peter Miskimmin
Chief Executive
