[FYI request #28257 email]
Tēnā koe Stephen
Thank you for your Of icial Information Act request to the Department of Conservation,
received on 31 August 2024 in which you asked for:
1. Al correspondence since 1 Jan 2024 between DOC and other Crown agencies
regarding costs to make good the Whakapapa ski concession area, and associated
facilities. For instance lift removal, remediation, ski field buildings, ski club lodges and
related infrastructure such as reticulated services etc. Please include all, identified
costs such as DOC internal personnel, contract resources as backfil where staff are
assigned, or fixed term employees tasked to manage or participate in this work.
Please provide the information in 6 monthly periods where this is available.
2. The forecast income loss that DOC wil experience as a result of the cessation of ski
field operations. Including discussions with other crown agencies.
3. Al internal DOC correspondence identifying how these figures were determined, and
the degree of confidence.
4. Al documentation correspondence from 1 Jan 2024 that addresses scenarios to
reduce or mitigate the financial impact of such an outcome.
5. Al ministerial briefings or updates which address this outcome
On 18 September we sought to clarify your request. Your reply confirmed that timeframes
associated with your query could be refined from 1 January to 31 August 2024. You also
confirmed that for question 4:
‘I wish to receive all information that covers operating scenarios which reduce the
requirement for make good activities. For instance retention of some facilities such as
newer infrastructure or repurposing buildings to provide alternate functions enabling
them to be retained through for an extended period.’
This letter is to advise you that we are extending the 20 working day period to respond to
your request, as allowed under section 15A(1) of the Official Information Act 1982. We
require an additional 15
days to respond to your request. We wil send you a response no
later than 18 October 2024, earlier if possible.

The extension of time is necessary as the consultations necessary to make a decision on the
request mean that a proper response to the request cannot reasonably be made within the
original time limit. The length of the extension is also representative of the need to search
through a large quantity of information to service your request and meeting the original time
limit would unreasonably interfere with the Department’s operations.
You have the right, under section 28(3) of the Of icial Information Act to make a complaint to
an Ombudsman about the extension.
If you wish to discuss this response to your request, please contact
[email address].
