Thank you for your email of 19 August 2024 to Te Kaunihera o Pōneke | Wellington City Council (the 
Council) requesting the following information regarding Mayor Whanau’s ADHD diagnosis. Your 
request has been considered under the Local Government Of icial Information and Meetings Act 1987 
(LGOIMA). Please find my response below.  
 
1.  Please provide the dates when Mayor Tory Whanau disclosed her ADHD and traits of autism 
to each of the 15 city council ors and how this was done. 
These conversations had with Mayor Whanau and her colleagues were conducted in a personal and 
private capacity, which means that the dates were not recorded. I am therefore refusing this question 
pursuant to section 17(g)(i) of the LGOIMA, as the information requested is not held by the local 
authority and the person dealing with the request has no grounds for believing that the information is 
held by another local authority or a department or Minister of the Crown or organisation. 
2.  Please provide all instances/dates/length of time/if any, when rest has been scheduled for 
Mayor Tory Whanau by her staff or rest has been requested or taken by Mayor Whanau to 
date. 
Mayor Whanau does not have specific ‘rest times’ as a result of her ADHD diagnosis. I am therefore 
refusing this question pursuant to section 17(g)(i) of the LGOIMA, as the information requested is not 
held by the local authority and the person dealing with the request has no grounds for believing that 
the information is held by another local authority or a department or Minister of the Crown or 
organisation. 
3.  Please provide the exact instructions or plan for managing Mayor Whanau’s diagnosis that 
was given/communicated to her staff by her Mayor Whanau and the date this was 
communicated. 
 
Council staff were informed verbally of Mayor Whanau’s diagnosis in the weeks prior to the NZ Herald 
of 6 June 2024. Staff were verbally asked to keep meetings to 30 minutes that aren’t board meetings, 
workshops, committees or speaking events.  
 
4.  Please provide the start and finish times for the following meetings? 
 
a.  21st May – Business advisory group 
4:00PM – 5:30PM 
 
b.  9th May – 3 Waters reform advisory group.  
This meeting occurred on 10 July and the mayor attended from 11:45AM – 1:30PM 
 
c.  18th June – Mayor’s business group 
4:00PM – 5:00PM

d.  April 5th – Leadership forum 
10:00AM – 12:00PM 
 
e.  April 22nd – Vice Mayor of Beijing 
5:30PM – 6:00PM. Please note this meeting was to discuss the World Tourism Cities 
Federation (WTCF). 
 
f.  15th April – Sale of Airport shares 
3:30PM – 4:00PM 
 
It should be noted that the that these times have been pulled from the mayor’s calendar where if the 
meeting went shorter or longer than expected that this may not have been recorded. 
 
You have the right, by way of complaint under section 28(1) of the LGOIMA, to request an 
investigation and review of the Council’s decision to withhold information by the Ombudsman.
