Subject: Message to CFO regarding current conditions

Hi All

As you are all aware, the West Coast is currently experiencing an extreme weather event.

While a Red alert was put out by Metservice last night, information received this morning has indicated that the levels of rainfall expected in some areas could be greater than first forecast.

This includes:

At present we have requested a USAR team to be deployed to Westport to support the efforts of the brigade and CDEM, should evacuations be needed, as there is an increased risk in this area.

We have a second team on standby to come should there be a need tomorrow.

Due to the potential in the forecast we have kept all West Coast resources within their FRA at present.

We have also have 2 Executive Officers being based in Westport.  Myles Taylor and Trevor O’Dea.

We have 3 Executive Officers based in Greymouth. Myself, Atila de Oliveira and Mike Johns.

Key for brigades is to ensure that you are aware of the risks should you be called out, particularly with Strong winds, surface flooding, and potential for creeks and rivers to rise rapidly.  Ensure your wet weather gear is in place, and any other emergency arrangements.

Below is the NIWA twitter feed that provides some background on this Rainfall event.

Some areas may experience higher than is shown here, as the models have been updated since these were produced.  Particularly in Kahuranaki National park.
