Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 2 January 2023, in which you asked for Police
deployment information over the holiday period in popular holiday spots.
My response to each of your questions can be found below.
1) How many police were deployed on each shift in Whangamata, Waihi Beach, Raglan, Coromandel,
Whitianga, Kawhia, Mt Maunganui, Queenstown and Wanaka on 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st
December 2022 and 1st and 2nd January 2023.
The table below shows the headcount of police officers working in each of those listed locations on those days.
The information for 26 December 2022 is included because some of them wil have worked through midnight
into 27 December 2022, even though their working hours are attributed to the day on which they start the shift.
Please note that al staff are assigned a
base station even if they are not always working at that exact location
on each shift. Likewise, staff from nearby stations wil certainly have been working (or available to work) in each
of those towns, despite their base locations not being in those towns. For this reason, these numbers do not
represent the complete extent of Constabulary resources at work on those days in those areas. For example, on
New Years Eve, officers wil have travelled to Mount Maunganui from their assigned base in Tauranga, based
on demand, but this wil not be reflected in the following headcounts.

2) How many arrests were made in each of the above towns on each of the above dates.
Police produces statistics for Proceedings against Offenders and not ‘arrests’. A proceeding counts each
separate occasion when Police deal with an alleged offender for one or more offences. Proceedings for official
statistics are classified according to the most serious offence that the offender is dealt with on that occasion.
Also, Police publishes statistics by month and year and not for specific dates or periods.
Police proactively releases crime statistics to the public and these are updated monthly. These statistics can be
viewed and downloaded online from policedata.nz.
For your request, please refer to the “Proceedings (police stations)” report. You can access this data by
completing the following steps:
•
Go to policedata.nz and click on the “Proceedings (police stations)” report.
•
From the “Proceedings (police stations)” report, select the tab labelled “Districts”.
•
Select the time period you require by moving the sliding bar on “Select Time Period”. Please note that
Police produces statistics by months and years, not for specific dates or periods.
•
Proceedings against Offenders can be found under the “Crime Type” table. Please note that you need to
click on the icon that has square with a + symbol in it over the ANZSOC Division heading to reveal each
category.
•
Police produces statistics for defined Police boundaries under the table “Police Boundaries”. Please note
that you need to click on the icon that has square with a + symbol in it over the “Police District” and “Police
Area” categories.
o Coromandel Police Station, Waihi Police Station, Whangamata Police Station and Whitianga Police
Station is found under Waikato District and Waikato East Police Area.
o Kawhia Police Station and Raglan Police Station is found under Waikato Police District and Waikato
West Police Area.
o Mount Maunganui Police Station is found under the Bay of Plenty Police District and the Western
Bay of Plenty Police Area.
o Queenstown Police Station and Wanaka Police Station are found under Southern District and the
Otago Lakes Central Police Area.

After selecting the ANZSOC and Police District/Area/Station categories of interest, the “Trend” chart
automatically shows the volume of Proceedings against Offenders by Police boundary and by month,
respectively.
Finally, you can download detailed information about these data using the download icon at the bottom of
the page and selecting “Data”.
